A number of companies that I work with use the Acctinfo.dll to provide  additional user information when working with Active Directory Users and Computers (DSA.MSC).  You can download Acctinfo.dll from the Microsoft web site as part of the Account Lockout and Management Tools package.

What isn’t quite so well known is that an updated version of the tool, Acctinfo2.dll, has been available for some time.  There is sadly no download available for it and the only way I know to get hold of it is via Microsoft Product Support Services (PSS).  The newer version contains a number of enhancements, such as:

  • Ability to view replication metadata.  This provides the same information as the repadmin /showmeta <objectDN> command.
  • Support for lastLogonTimestamp attribute.  The original acctinfo.dll only shows the last logon for a specific Domain Controller.
  • The tab now appears as an option when users are returned as a result of a search.  This was not the case with acctinfo.dll.

The screenshot below shows the acctinfo2.dll in action.

I was pleased to see from Kurt Roggen’s Blog that Acctinfo.dll still works with Vista SP1 and RSAT.  Based on this, I thought I would try to get Acctinfo2.dll working on Vista SP1 and RSAT.  Unfortunately, I currently only have a 64-bit version of Vista in my VMWare lab environment and it doesn’t work on this platform.  The dll fails to register with the following error:

“The module “c:\windows\acctinfo2.dll” was loaded but the call to DllRegisterServer failed with error code 0×80070002.”

I’ve since had it confirmed from an authoritative source within Microsoft that the tool won’t load on a x64 platform.  It seems no further development of the tool is planned, which is a shame given that so may people appear to be using it. ++++ Update: news about a 64-bit version available here ++++

There are a number of different versions of Acctinfo2.dll floating around.  If you are planning to request a copy from PSS make sure it is the following (or more recent):

Version (Modified: Thursday, 26 October 2006)

  1. Jim says:

I just got hit with this on vista x64. I cant believe M$ would not rewrite this simple dll to expose this ADUC property page.

  2. Steve says:

I have been looking everywhere and still have not found Acctinfo2.dll – can you help me find it?

  3. admin says:

    Hi Steve

As I mention in the blog, the tool is only available from Microsoft PSS. I spoke to the person that wrote the tool a while back and suggested Microsoft make it more publicly available, but that hasn’t happened.

  4. bret says:

I just got off the phone w/ PSS and they told me that the file is not available for release to the public. After arguing with them they told me that the technology I was seeking was outdated and I should use updated technology. I told them that was what I was trying to do – update my technology! Then I asked for the URL to download the update technology that replaced this and he told me he didn’t know what URL would work for me.

  5. bret says:

Update – I tried again and got a different “tech”. They sent me the file and it is working. They said it is still in Beta so there is no support and has not been fully tested. The file date is 10-26-06 so it has been in beta for quite awhile now. Haven’t gotten it to work on x64 but everything else is working.

  6. pmond says:

hi bret I’m looking for this update and I asked MS technician, he told me it doesn’t exist. maybe you could share this dll. thanks in advance.

  7. Jason says:

I was able to obtain through microsoft technet plus subscription. I used the online concierge chat and they emailed the dll to me

  8. hkp says:

I used the concierge chat with my Microsoft technet plus subscription, but the rep did not send me the dll, but told me that is not for public. Any way to get this dll?

  9. BrianG07 says:

I tried the Microsoft TechNet Plus Subscription Concierge Chat service first and they said I would need to talk to Microsoft Support.

So instead of calling one of the support numbers that Concierge Chat gave me, I just used my free Microsoft Volume Licensing Software Assurance e-mail support option (http://Support.Microsoft.com/sasupport) and told them that I heard they may have the acctinfo2.dll 32-bit file and I that wanted to get it so I could search for users and still see the “Additional Account Info” tab. And with the first response back they gave me a link to download and the instructions!

My guess is that Microsoft doesn’t want to make the file public as you have to make a AD database change, which requires the appropriate Enterprise Admin access of your domain controllers to do so. Thankfully I’m the AD admin at my company so I can do this.

    • AcctInfo2.dll v1.0.0.1111 & LockoutStatus.exe v1.0.0.50, Account Lockout and Management Tools Plug-In, http://www.Microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=7AF2E69C-91F3-4E63-8629-B999ADDE0B9E&displaylang=en, TechNet.Microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc738772(WS.10).aspx, for WinNT4x86-2000×86-XP32-Vista32-7×86-RSAT32, $FREE – This web page does not state that the file is compatible with later versions of Windows and admin tools, but it does work. You can also have the v1 tab visible at the same time as the v2 tab, except when searching for a user account. Note that the v1 in the middle tells you when the account “Unlocks”, which v2 does not provide, which is good for environments where accounts auto-unlock after a certain period of time. NOTE: Microsoft does not recommend that you use the ALockout.dll tool on servers that host network programs or services. You should keep ALockout.dll off of Exchange servers because the ALockout.dll tool may prevent the Exchange store from starting!
